For the woman who wishes to terminate an early pregnancy, yet avoid a surgical abortion, the medical abortion offers an excellent option. All three recognized medical protocols use a combination of drugs, one to end the pregnancy and a second to stimulate uterine contractions to expel the remaining products of conception.

Key Disadvantages

Inclusion criteria. (You must meet all of the following to be eligible for a medical abortion using Mifipristone.)

Be in good general health.
Be 63 days or less pregnant by our ultrasound.
Be willing to have a surgical abortion if the medical abortion fails.
Be willing to have a pelvic examination, ultrasound, laboratory blood and urine testing.
Be willing and able to sign an informed consent.
Have immediate access to a telephone and have someone with you that can provide emergency transportation if it is needed.
Be willing to comply with a mandatory follow-up schedule.

Exclusion criteria. (You must NOT meet any of the following criteria to be eligible for a medical abortion using Mifipristone.)

Use any form of steroid medication.
Have active P.I.D.
Have active adrenal disease.
Have insulin dependant diabetes mellitus.
Be breast feeding, unless you are willing to stop for 1 full week.
Have severe mental health diseases.
Have severe asthma, glaucoma, mitral stenosis, arterial hypotension, sickle cell anemia, prostaglandin allergy.
Have a history of severe thrombophlebitis, liver, respiratory or renal disease.
Have any heart disease, including untreated or uncontrolled hypertension with systolic B.P. over 140 mm hcg or 90 mm diastolic, congestive heart failure, angina, valve disease and arrhythmia.
Have anemia with a hemoglobin of <10 gm/dL.
Have blood clotting defect or be on anticoagulants.
Have an I.U.D. in place.
Have an ectopic pregnancy, threatened or missed abortion.
